Rods, reels & LINE: precision in action
My top recommendation for the most well-rounded and value-packed rod as we kick off 2024 is the Orvis 5, 6, 8 wt Clearwater Series. This particular setup has gained significant popularity among local guides who consider it their preferred choice for clients. What sets Orvis apart is their user-friendly online repair policy combined with rod registration. This feature ensures a swift and hassle-free process for replacing any broken segments, and they pledge an impressive 5-business day turnaround to swiftly get you back on the water. For more details, you can explore their Rod Repair Policy here. The Clearwater Series Rods, known for their durability, lightness, and versatility, stand out as one of my top picks for an everyday rod in 2024.
My Hydros II reel with me while chasing cutthroat in Montana.
As for reels, I’ve fallen in love with my Hydros II (3-5 wt.)
The Orvis Hydros Series offers line wights 1-11, perfect for every target. It’s lightweight, and durable. Even if set down on rocks, it’s very hard to scratch. They’ve improved their drag knob and added stacked carbon and stainless steel disc washers making it also super durable. Even with a large arbor, it feels very balanced on light rods.
For line, I have been running the Scientific Angler Trout line for everyday use. And a second spool with Scientific Angler Titan for streamers.
For saltwater, depending on what you’re going for, the SA Salt Water Grand Slam is a great option for floating line as it loads efficiently, effortlessly slices through wind, and can effectively deliver heavy saltwater flies.
Waders
Finding reliable and comfortable chest waders tailored to the unique bodies of women has always been difficult. Enter the Orvis Clearwater Chest Waders for Women. Here’s my in-depth review after putting these waders through their paces. For reference, I am 5’6″, 135 lbs, shoe size 7.5 US.
Comfort and Fit (5/5): The first thing that impressed me was the tailored fit designed specifically for women. The waders conform to the female body, providing a comfortable and unrestricted range of motion. The adjustable suspenders and waist belt ensure a secure fit without sacrificing flexibility during those long hours on the water. Plus, it doesn’t look like a bag on – you can keep your curves.
Durability and Build (4.5/5): Constructed with durable materials, the Orvis Clearwater Chest Waders are built to withstand the rigors of most terrain, but are soft and comfortable. The reinforced knees add an extra layer of protection, allowing you to confidently navigate rough terrains without worrying about wear and tear. The neoprene booties are robust and well-insulated, ensuring both durability and warmth in colder waters.
Waterproof Performance (5/5): The breathable fabric kept me dry throughout, and the fully sealed seams provided an extra layer of protection against water ingress. The external storage pocket is a great addition, offering convenient and accessible storage space for essentials without compromising the waders’ waterproof integrity.
Neoprene Booties (4.5/5): The neoprene booties are a standout feature, providing a snug fit and excellent insulation. They kept my feet warm even during extended periods in chilly water. The addition of gravel guards is a thoughtful touch, preventing debris from entering the boots and ensuring a comfortable fishing experience. I could possibly see how women with bigger feet might find it a bit tight.
External Storage Pocket (5/5): The external and internal storage pocket is a game-changer, offering a secure and easily accessible space for small tools, tippets, or any essentials you need to keep close at hand. The internal pocket fits my phone perfectly. These pockets add a level of convenience that I found invaluable out on the water.
Definitely the best waders I’ve owned, and would absolutely recommend them any female angler.

accessories
Suglasses:
I can not rave about my Costa Del Mar sunglasses enough. Unparalleled clarity and comfort that truly set them apart from any sunglasses I’ve ever had. I wore them to Belize last year and the exceptional polarized lenses reduced glare, providing a crystal-clear view even with my sensitive eyes. The rugged build ensures they withstand the elements, making them a reliable companion for any outdoor adventure. Costa Del Mar “May” sunglasses effortlessly combine fashion with function, enhancing both my style and visual experience, making them an indispensable part of my everyday essentials.
Rubber Nets:
Rubber nets are a crucial accessory for any angler, contributing significantly to the well-being of both fish and the overall fishing experience. Unlike traditional nylon nets, rubber nets are gentle on the fish’s protective slime layer, ensuring their safe release back into the water. This not only promotes ethical angling practices but also contributes to the conservation of fish populations. Additionally, rubber nets are less likely to tangle with hooks, minimizing the risk of injuries to both the angler and the catch. Their lightweight and durable design make them easy to handle, adding an extra layer of convenience to every fishing trip. Investing in a quality rubber net is not just about practicality; it’s a commitment to responsible and sustainable fishing. Click here for a great rubber net option on Amazon.
TIPPET
Selecting the right tippet is a critical decision in fly fishing, and my preference leans towards fluorocarbon for its exceptional properties. Fluorocarbon tippet offers superb invisibility underwater, ensuring a more natural presentation of flies to wary fish. Its higher density allows for faster sinking, crucial when nymphing or fishing subsurface. Moreover, fluorocarbon’s abrasion resistance provides confidence when dealing with challenging conditions or toothy species. Whether I’m casting delicate dry flies or nymphing in challenging waters, the reliable strength and transparency of fluorocarbon make it my go-to choice for achieving successful and stealthy presentations on the fly.

Durability is paramount, and Simms consistently delivers with rugged materials that withstand the rigors of diverse fishing environments. When it comes to gearing up for a successful day on the water, Simms is my trusted choice for top-tier performance and reliability.

Their clothing seamlessly combines technical features with a contemporary design, ensuring comfort and confidence on the water.
